| Miasma A contemporary fantasy thriller, set in a fictional country based on Hawaii. When I came up with the idea, I wanted to take Clive Cussler and put stories like he writes in a fantasy, with magic. I also wanted to do a story with strong women characters get to do realistic action based on their abilities and strengths -- rather than adding extra magic powers or making the action easy. I also wanted to leave off the romance that typically comes with female characters and focus more on giving them action scenes. But when I wrote the story, I had some problems related, oddly, to how I organize. I couldn't identify what they were, so I took Holly Lisle's How to Write a Novel. I learned a lot about how my writing process works, and it transformed this book. You can get a peek into by following #MiasmaNovel on Twitter. Organizing a Novel When You're Right Brained This book came out of the revisions to Miasma. From my research, I discovered that writing is a left-brained activity. Most of the typical writing solutions in the craft books are also for the left-brained (i.e., outlines, character worksheets, novel notebooks), and there just wasn't anything available. So I had to find a way on my own, and this book is to help people like me. |
